birmingham uni drones report coverThe All Party Parliamentary Group on Drones, headed by MP Tom Watson, wrote to foreign secretary Philip Hammond on the 14th, commending the decision to support the renewal of the mandate of the Convention on Conventional Weapons and to continue discussions in 2015 on ‘lethal autonomous weapons systems’ (‘LAWS’).

On the 19th a more formal letter was sent to Mr Hammond, asking for the release of the secret guidelines governing the sharing of intelligence that helps US forces kill militants with drone strikes.

It was also signed by Sir David Omand, the former director of the government monitoring agency GCHQ, a member of the APPG.

Both letters referred to the work of the Birmingham Policy Commission on the Security Impact of Drones, see October’s post.
