independents week usa

Independents’ Week, which will showcase small stores, started in Birmingham on July 1st, to coincide with the launch of a new guide and map. The Post reports that the aim is to raise the profile of the mix of unique shops on offer in Birmingham and encourage visitors to continue to explore these hidden gems. One of America’s better ideas, Independents Week (logo above), is a nationwide campaign to engage local independent businesses and community members together in celebrating the spirit of entrepreneurism and individuality independent businesses embody.

The American Independent Business Alliance (AMIBA) describes it as a chance to join with hundreds of other communities across the nation and celebrate the freedoms and opportunities independent businesses provide:

A few miles away in Shirley on Saturday, Independents’ Day was celebrated – pictures to follow on Our Solihull website. This is a celebration of all the independent specialist shops in Shirley with trials, tasters and family packed entertainment including a mini market, free goodies, circus skills and craft activities.

As AMIBA says, these are occasions, “to recognize these businesses for their time, talent, goods, and services, and contributions to the community – and to recognize local residents’ role in shaping the community’s future”.
