The Birmingham Mail and Mail Online reported this week that Birmingham City Council, despite announcing earlier this month that it faces a £110million budget shortfall and its leader’s warning that entire services could be cut, held a banquet to welcome the city’s new Lord Mayor which has cost the taxpayer £27,000.

Bristol council’s annual celebration cost nothing this year; the Mayor paid for small event in the council parlour. Manchester’s celebration – a lunch for 22 guests – cost just £440.

The mayoral committee will now review the authority’s deal with its Civic Catering company which charges a commercial rate bill for food and room hire.
