Recently one of the region’s industrialists questioned the gloom about recession, saying that when he meets others their experience of orders coming in at a good rate is similar to his. He wondered why the region’s manufacturers are being ‘talked down’.

His subjective view is confirmed in a Manufacturing Outlook survey by accountants BDO (Acronym: Binder Dijker Otte) and EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation, (formerly the Engineering Employers’ Federation) which works with manufacturing, engineering and technology-based businesses in the UK.

The second quarter EEF/BDO Manufacturing Outlook survey shows that output and orders in the West Midlands remained firmly in positive territory over the last three months at +29 and +36 per cent respectively. Chart 10 on page 7 indicates c50% higher output compared with this year’s first quarter.

Perhaps West Midlands manufacturers should aggregate positive news online and ‘talk up’ the sector’s achievements.
