Besides being founder members of this new economics group, Alan and Hazel Clawley are founder-members of the Small Heath and District Credit Union, one of many community-based credit unions started up by the state-funded Birmingham Credit Union Development Agency in the 1990s.

Alan will describe how a small local credit union works and examine claims that credit unions could offer an antidote to big impersonal banks.
