In 2011 many of you read about Urban Harvest, a social enterprise harvesting surplus fruit from the back gardens and public land of Birmingham and turning it into Urban Harvest fruit juice, pickles, preserves and dried fruit.

Apples and pears have been turned into juice in partnership with Pershore College in Worcestershire, but this year (2012) Urban Harvest hopes to set up its own pressing plant.

Some will have become members of the project, paying to have their fruit picked and turned into fruit juice which is bottled and returned to them.

Advice on caring for and pruning their tree can be given to members and there is an annual Apple Day celebration event in October. Any juice not given back to members is sold at farmers’ markets and through local outlets. Read on.
